First Nations Fishing

Fishing-Types of Fishing The main types of fish _*halibut,*salmon,*herring,*smelt, ling cod, and sturgeon. The fathers caught them, the mothers prepared them, and the children helped them. Fish were preserved by smoking or drying them.

Weirs A fence built across a stream. Salmon are trapped against the fence. Fishermen spear the fish.

Nets Twine is made from cedar bark and stems from nettle plants. Reef nets went between two canoes. Dip nets were attached to a long handle. Bag shaped nets went across the stream between posts.

Traps Made out of logs or rocks placed on the beach. They used the tides to catch the fish.

Hook, Lures, Rakes and Harpoons Hooks were used for halibut. Spears and lures caught ling cod. Rakes were used to catch herring. Rakes and dip nets were used to catch smelts.
