Reconstruction Begins SWBAT: Analyze the different views on Reconstruction by creating a list of the features of each of the three different views. Essential Question: How should Reconstruction be handled?

Do Now  What was Lincoln’s main goal throughout the Civil War? How could his main goal affect how the south was treated after the Civil War?

Reconstruction  Period where the U.S. started to rebuild after the civil war. ( )  The process the federal government used to readmit the defeated confederate states to the Union.

Key Questions 1. How do we bring the South back into the Union? 2. How do we rebuild the South after its destruction during the war? 3. How do we integrate and protect newly- emancipated black freedmen? 4. What branch of government should control the process of Reconstruction?

Quick Information  Congress- made up only of states which had not succeeded, representatives= 80 Democrats and 103 Republicans  Lincoln- Presidents during the war. His main goal was to reunite the union (political party= Republican)  Andrew Johnson- Lincoln’s Vice President, Jacksonian Democrat, Southerner from Raleigh, NC

Vocabulary  Amnesty- Policy of forgiveness  10% plan- When 10% of the voting population in the 1860 election had taken an oath of loyalty and established a government, it would be recognized.  Wade-Davis Bill- When 50% of the voting population in the 1860 election had taken an oath of loyalty and established a government, it would be recognized.  13 th Amendment- an amendment to the Constitution which would abolish slavery in the United States.  14 th Amendment- grants citizenship to "all persons born or naturalized in the United States" which included former slaves who had just been freed after the Civil War.

Your Task  There are three posters (Lincoln, Congress, and Johnson) in the room. You will be given 5 mins with each of these posters, for a total of 15 minutes. Together you are to analyze the information you have learned to identify which ideas you believe belong on each poster, and why.

Discussion  Were there any ideas which you had a hard time placing? If so why?  How were you able to decide which phrase or action went with each plan? Explain.  Were there any ideas which you feel were unrealistic? Explain.  Were there any ideas which you felt were too strict or not strict enough? If so which ones? Why?

Lincoln’s Reconstruction Plan  The 10% Plan- Permitted the state to rejoin the Union when 10% of its residents swore their loyalty to the United States.  Replace majority rule with “loyal rule” in the South.  Pardon to all but the highest ranking military and civilian Confederate officers.  When 10% of the voting population in the 1860 election had taken an oath of loyalty and established a government, it would be recognized.

Lincoln’s Plan Continued  Lenient Reconstruction  Angered Radical Republicans  He didn’t consult Congress regarding Reconstruction.

Johnson’s Plan  Similar to Lincoln’s Plan  Each state had to…  Offered amnesty upon simple oath to all except Confederate civil and military officers, and those whose wealth exceeded $20,000  In new constitutions, they must accept minimum conditions repudiating slavery, secession and state debts.  To repudiate is to refuse to have anything to do with.  Named provisional governors in Confederate states and called them to oversee elections for constitutional conventions.

Congress’s Plan  Also known as Radical Reconstruction  South divided into 5 military districts controlled by army  Required new state constitutions, including black suffrage and ratification of the 13 th and 14 th Amendments.

Exit Ticket  Examine the three plans for Reconstruction. Which of these plans would be the most successful in your opinion? Explain.
