Electromagnetism Making a temporary magnet using electricity

Purpose How are electricity and magnetism related? In this experiment the goal is to create a magnet by using electricity.

Hypothesis If _________________________________ (use independent variable) Then ______________________________. (use dependent variable) The reason for this is _________________ ___________________________________

Materials 100 cm of coated copper wire 1 D cell (battery) 1 iron bolt 1 electrical tape Minimum of 12 paperclips

Procedure

Variables Independent variable: __________________ Dependent variable: strength of electromagnet as measured by number of paperclips picked up Constants: __________________ __________________ Control: __________________

Qualitative Observations Number of coilsObservations

Quantitative data Independent Variable _______________________ Dependent variable _______________________________

Variable Change New Independent Variable: Procedure Change: 2 nd set of Data

Label the Dependent (responding) variable and include the units Label the numbers used in the data table. Label the Independent (manipulated) variable and include unit of measurement Write a title that describes the graph Graph: ________________________________________________________ Label the numbers used in the data table.

Analysis of Graph

Improvements What would improve the procedure? What would you investigate next?

Conclusion
