After the Midterm: A Time to Reflect Success in Math Mathematics Assistance Centre Centre for Student Success

Outline: What should you do when you get your midterm back? Consider your options. Where do you go from here? How do I study math? After the Midterm: A Time to Reflect

What should you do when you get your midterm back? Were the results what you expected? Did you do better than you expected? Worse? After the Midterm: A Time to Reflect

What should you do when you get your midterm back? Were the results what you expected? Did you do better than you expected? Worse? Did you feel prepared going into the midterm? Were there any other factors that may have affected your performance? After the Midterm: A Time to Reflect

What should you do when you get your midterm back? Were the results what you expected? Did you do better than you expected? Worse? Did you feel prepared going into the midterm? Were there any other factors that may have affected your performance? Look back at your midterm and identify where you lost marks. Were your errors mechanical in nature, or conceptual? Rework incorrect solutions – math is cumulative, so you will likely need to use many of the same concepts/methods throughout the second half of the course. After the Midterm: A Time to Reflect

Consider your options. Work out your approximate grade in the course at this point. For Winter term 2015, the last day to drop a course without failure is MARCH 6– is dropping the course something that should be considered? Keep in mind, Laurier’s “two-strike” rule! Consider not just math, but your progress in all your courses. Academic advisors – at the Department level, faculty level, and Central Academic Advising (if considering switching programs outside your faculty) Appointments next week with the Program Coordinator (Cassandra) to discuss individual situations. Where do you go from here? What study techniques are you currently using? What is working, what’s not? Study Skills Centre (wlu.ca/study) – workshops and appointments available to assess your learning style & strategies. How can you start preparing for the final exam? Consider the discussion during “Writing A Math Exam” workshop – there are many resources available and opportunities to get extra help. After the Midterm: A Time to Reflect

How do you study math? Get the most out of your lectures, go to every class. Attend all the Math Mentoring Sessions, bring questions and collaborate with the other students. Make use of the MAC Drop-In Hours, Residence Drop-In Hours and Directed Homework Sessions (if applicable). Do the homework, and practice, practice, practice! Get help when you need it -- don't assume you can skip it and catch up later. Be aware of how much time you have to study and prepare a study schedule accordingly. After the Midterm: A Time to Reflect

Take advantage of all the resources available to you!
