3 Swinburne Introduction: PR Coordinator 3 Thank you all for coming. These workshops are held to: Remind you that you need to improve your academic performance to be able to finish your course Provide you with some skills to improve your academic performance Tell you about the free support services that are available to you

4 Swinburne Why you are here? There are two categories of Progress Review: (1) At Risk – this is you You have failed half or more of your total enrolled credit points, or you have failed a unit twice The University has designated that you are At Risk of not passing your course We want you to take some time to think about what you are going to do about your studies (2) If you continue to fail next progress review period you could be in a very serious situation – Show Cause 4

5 Swinburne What you need to do: an academic perspective 5 Academic staff member Many different factors can impact on your academic performance. Each of you are exposed to different pressures. One of the most common reasons student give for not keeping up with their studies is: Time Management – working too many hours and missing classes; inability to complete essays/keep up with the reading? Swinburne 5

6 What you need to do (Continued) 6 (1) Attend all classes and submit all assessments (on time) Downloading Lectopia is not a substitute for class participation and discussion (2) Allocate enough quality time to your studies Plan and dont leave things to the last minute (3) Ask questions if you dont understand something (4) Look after your health and well being (5) Know who your Unit Convenors & Program Coordinator are, and how to contact them

7 Swinburne What you need to do (Continued) 7 ( 6) Regularly check your student emails (7) Be familiar with your unit outlines (on Blackboard) (8) Have you redone your course plan? If you fail units, you need to go back and redo your course plan to check whether you have the necessary prerequisites, or whether you need to reorder units. (9) Have you been to your Faculty Office for advise when you have a problem? Faculty staff are there to help you, or to refer you to someone who can. (10)Familiarise yourself with your Facultys website for announcements

22 Swinburne A flyer is being handed around. 22 It tells you where you can go for support: *Academic *Advocacy *Computing *Counselling *Course Advice *Health and Well Being, and *Pastoral Care The second tool that you should go to is the online Self Analysis Tool http://www.swinburne.edu.au/studentoperations/progress/self-analysis It has been developed to help you to individually think about what is interfering with your studies. Your answers are confidential and not recorded. You also have an option to print it out and to develop a personalised Academic Progress Plan. If you havent already used the Tool – it was mentioned in your At Risk letter, I encourage you to use it.
