© International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Page 3 IB – The Diploma Model Grounded in the liberal arts tradition, the IB Diploma Program features concurrent study in 6 (or 5) subject areas in a rich curriculum that combines breadth and depth. Designed to instill a global perspective and to promote cross- cultural understanding and respect, the Diploma Program emphasizes inquiry-based learning and discovery. Along with a sense of social responsibility, students develop independent and critical- thinking skills vital to university studies. The Diploma Program rounds out students' experiences through creative expression, community involvement and physical activity.

© International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Timeline for 2014/2015 Page 4 IB League of Parents – Staff Presentation Schedule February 16 – Group 4 (Experimental Sciences) and Group 5 (Math) March 29 – Extended Essay and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) Purpose: To have meetings centered on the courses students will take in the IBDP in grades 11/12. IB teachers will share curriculum content and big ideas of the courses they teach. They will also highlight the differences between the IB and OSSD for their subject area too.

© International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Grade 10 Options –Preparing for IB What is the same? Page 5 Each student still selects 8 credits of courses Each student will have a balanced timetable Students will still take an English, Math, History, and Science class.

© International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 What is different for grade 10 options Students may opt OUT of Careers and Civics in grade 10 Students will receive a “substitution” in their final semester of IB Students who do not complete the IB diploma must take these compulsory courses  Courses will be “set” into semesters MPM2D1 sem 1 CHC2D1 sem 1 SNC2D1 sem 1 ENG2D1 sem 2 MCR3U1 sem 2 FSF2D1/LWSBU1 sem 2 – if they want to take French as their second language IB

© International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 What do we do with electives?  Students can choose 2 elective courses total (one each semester)  Students can select careers and civics if they wish  Students can select courses they enjoy, or something they would not be able to take in IB Ex. Students can take a grade 11 science option Students may select 2 of the 3 sciences in IB Combinations: chemistry & biology OR chemistry & physics If you want to take 2 science courses in IB, then choose either biology or physics as the elective courses

© International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Timelines for the “IB Decision”  At Option Sheet Time in grade 10, students will decide if they want to continue with IB, or take regular OSSD courses for grade 11.  This will be released next week at the IB Night, a copy will be ed to you too.  Will be an application and option sheet (2 separate documents)  Students intending to take IB will register for specific HL (3 courses) and SL courses (3 courses).  Students not intending to pursue IB will select regular OSSD courses from the option sheet.

© International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Views on IB from McGill and McMaster Page 9 McGill University - Montreal McGill has enthusiastically recruited IB students for over two decades. Even today, when reviewing an application from an IB Diploma candidate, whether from the local CEGEP, across Canada or the other side of the globe, our admissions officers can be assured of the candidate's strong and broad-based academic preparation. We have seen that IB students embrace the rigorous academic challenges of university life and perform well in their McGill programs. As a member of the College and University Recognition Taskforce, I can attest to the respected position of the IB diploma at prestigious universities throughout North America. Kim Bartlett - Director of Admissions and Recruitment, McGill University McMaster University “We are rather partial to the IB applicants who meet our admission requirements and certainly try to admit as many as we can, since we strongly believe that these applicants are well prepared to succeed academically at McMaster. While we must treat a grade as a grade from all ministry inspected schools, we do look at Education Source as part of our process. If the applicants indicate on their applications that they are completing the IB Diploma vs. the OSSD, then we can pick that up from our system information.” Rebecca Clifford – Director Admissions Process, McMaster University

© International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Preparing for university  What will we need for university? Ontario Universities require 6 grade 12 U or M level courses that they will use for an admissions average Universities will also have total IB scores required for admission  What marks/scores will I need? Each university will be different Each program will also be different

© International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 University admission  What courses will I need for university admission? Each program will have its own requirements Each university can determine the requirements for its own programs  General areas of university study – what they require. Business – English and 2 Math courses Science –English, Math, 2 Science courses Engineering – English, Math, Chemistry, Physics Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences – English  Students can meet ALL university entrance requirements with their IB choices.

© International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 How will universities recognize IB for admission?  Ontario universities will use OSSD grades first. Ontario universities will use what is in the student’s best advantage. OSSD admission average or IB Diploma Score  Universities outside of Ontario will have their own policies. McGill University can use IB grades for admission and advanced standing into second year.

© International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Ontario universities’ Application Cycle Here is how the admission cycle works January – look at courses completed in grade 11 only They can generate a conditional offer of admission March – look at a combination of grade 11 and 12 courses They can generate a conditional offer of admission May – look at grade 12 courses only (finals and midterms) – at this time, universities can also use IB predicted grades They can generate a conditional offer of admission July – All offers of admission are confirmed Final grades and final IB scores are sent to universities

© International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Benefit of IB in the admissions process  Many “competitive” programs require supplementary application information Examples - all programs request this University of Toronto – Rotman Commerce, Engineering Waterloo University – many programs have specific information requests for the AIF  An admissions average/score can be calculated in different ways IB total score can be helpful OSSD average based on 6 marks, including required courses

© International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 IB and University Admission  Scholarships require excellence in academics, involvement, and leadership.  What sets you apart from all the other 90%+ students?  Will IB be too hard and make it impossible to get into a university?

© International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Preparing for university and taking IB  Developing: Study skills Test taking skills Decision making skills Interest in learning new things Taking a broad set of courses beyond your field
