4 THE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME MODEL OF TEACHING AND LEARNING The IB Learner Profile is central to the philosophy of the Diploma Programme.

7 IB Diploma Programme students must choose one subject from each of five groups (1 to 5), Student may choose either an arts subject from group 6, or a second subject from groups 1 to 5.  complete an Extended Essay (EE)  follow a Theory of Knowledge course (TOK)  participate in Creativity, Action, Service (CAS).  three of the six subjects are studied at higher level (240 teaching hours)  the remaining three subjects are studied at standard level (150 teaching hours). 9 The Diploma course is demanding and rigorous. It is therefore important that students who enter the IB Diploma Programme are: Hard working Focused Independent thinkers Able to develop their time management skills. Open-minded (amongst many of the learner profile attributes) Willing to push themselves to be the best they can be English language Proficient: to be able to access the curriculum For those students coming to the IBDP programme from other schools it is important to have past reports and examination results (e.g. CXE or GCSE) in order to help with choices of subjects and levels. For CXE/GCSE a C would be needed for a standard level course and a B or above for higher level courses. ENTRANCE ON TO THE COURSE

10 The need to study a second language at the IB Diploma programme is something that makes this unique and contributes to International Mindedness. LANGUAGE B REQUIREMEN TS

11 There are a maximum of 7 points available for each of the six required elective courses; in addition, there are 3 points available for the combination of TOK and the Extended Essay. This makes a maximum total of 45 points. ASSESSMENT IN THE IB DIPLOMA Source – IBDP Handbook

12 Yes – however there are different levels within the programme. 1/ The full diploma programme – in which 3 higher, 3 standard and all core elements are completed. 2/ The shortened programme in which some of the academic subjects may change to standard level but all core elements are still covered. In this case Certificates are obtained for each subject. DOES EVERYONE ENTER THE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME?

13 In general, score at least a 4 in each subject, or 24 points or more in total. Will 24 points guarantee a Diploma? – Even if you have more than 28 points there are conditions in which you will not gain a Diploma. HOW CAN I ACHIEVE THE DIPLOMA? Ms Vicky

15 Mr Darryl The aim is to obtain a diploma, however a certificate is still an immense achievement and can lead on to further education possibilities. Just make sure that you do not get a certificate when you really should have got a diploma.

16 Assessment is based solely on two pieces of work: 1) The ToK Essay on a prescribed title (1200-1600 words). 2) The ToK Group Presentation (approx. 10 minutes per student). This is supervised and assessed by a teacher in the school. The final grade is then sent to the IB. THE IB DIPLOMA CORE PROGRAMME Theory of Knowledge Theory of Knowledge is a course centered around the question “How do we know?” Students are taught to seek out knowledge through critical thinking and analysis of the Ways of Knowing of Perception, Emotion, Reason and Language.

20 Universities consider the IB Diploma to be one of the most demanding secondary school curricula, offering ideal preparation for post-secondary studies. A student's participation in IB courses is, therefore, a very important consideration in admission decisions. It is to a student's distinct advantage to have completed IB courses, but especially so if the student is completing the IB Diploma. - CURT (College & University Task Force), July, 2009 Universities consider the IB Diploma to be one of the most demanding secondary school curricula, offering ideal preparation for post-secondary studies.
