Alumni networks James Gillies, Head of Communication, CERN Interactions, Toyama, April 2015

Objectives To foster a network of CERN ambassadors To gather information on career development of CERN alumni To build awareness, engagement and support for CERN A supplementary objective, to be introduced once the network is well established, is to contribute to CERN & Society fundraising

Research

Oxford: 14 staff & colleges, 185,000 alumni. Development office 80 staff EMBL: 1 staff, 3000 members Aluminati: for life, mentoring, round the clock support, £9k/year

Survey What alumni would expect from a CERN alumni programme. What alumni would be prepared to give to a CERN alumni programme. What the current employment/geographical situation of CERN alumni is. Mailed to 5000 people replies

Findings The largest single group at 27% of respondents are ex-users. Ex-staff constitute just 9% but if you add up all people who were paid by CERN in one form or another, they constitute 66% of respondents. The remainder classify themselves as 'other'. 72% of respondents were at CERN for less than 5 years. 66% are under 35 years of age. 79% are now located in Europe. 37% are involved with research, 36% are in industry. 70% were very interested in learning offers (seminars or e-learning). 70% were very interested in being informed about CERN employment opportunities and exclusive industry job opportunities. 94% would join an alumni programme. An overwhelming majority would be willing to be CERN ambassadors in one form or another. The vast majority are willing to engage in the following ways: give outreach talks, promote CERN in educational establishments and mentor fellow alumni.
