The History of Brazil Pre Colonial Colonial Independence

Pre Colonial Original Inhabitant came from Asia across North America and eventually settled in the Amazon Basin Hunters and gatherers Simple farming

Colonial In 1500 a Portuguese called Pedro Cabal discovered Brazil Settled in North East and started growing sugar cane Forced the Amerindians to work on the sugar plantations but were not very successful In 1560 SMALL POX killed thousands of Amerindians Started bringing in slaves from West Africa Over 4 million slaves

Independence In 1822 Brazil became INDEPENDENT when Prince of Portugal declared himself the Emperor of Brazil His son reigned after him Slave trade was abolished in 1850 People from Italy, Germany and Spain migrated were brought in to work Coffee became the no.1 export crop

In 1890 Brazil became a REPUBLIC( ruled without a king or queen) The Army took control and Brazil has been ruled by DICTATORS twice Democracy was achieved in 1989
