To meet the growing labor needs , Europeans enslaved millions of Africans and forced them to go the Americas.

4 Why it matters now Descendants of enslaved Africans represent a significant part of the population of the Americas today.

6 Setting the Stage Millions of native South Americans died form diseases, warfare and brutal treatment brought on by the Europeans. The sugar plantations and tobacco farms required many workers.

10 Causes of Slavery Slavery in Africa: slavery had existed for hundreds of years. Demand: After Native South Americans began dying the demand increased dramatically.

Spain and portugal led the way. (300,000) Demand grew as England began colonizing. (1.4 million)

As England’s presence in North America grew, the number of enslaved people grew tremendously. By 1840 it reached nearly 2 million in the British colonies
