2 BackGround Brazil is a country in South America and was under Portugal Rule until 1822 when Brazil gained its independence. Brazil abolished slavery in 1888 when it took on a new government. Brazil is the largest country in South American including population and land mass. Brazil is now South America’s leading economic power.

4 Revolution in Brazil Brazils Revolution brings economic power and freedom for their country. Brazil gains freedom from Portugal. Brazil becomes a monarchy.

5 1817 In 1817 Brazil was in its first revolution. The dominant classes of Pernambuco and surrounding states, severely affected by the crisis of sugar cane, proclaimed a Republic with a provisory constitution.

6 Indigenous People Many areas that were inhabited with the indigenous people was later invaded by slave hunters. There were many tribes and language groups.

7 Invaded At first native Brazilians did not resist against the Portuguese. They did show some fight, however, it did not make an impact.

8 Causes Napoleons invasions threatened Portugal. The monarchy feels threatened so they escape to Brazil. Joao has set reforms in Brazil. Some reforms backfire as it brought some disadvantages to plantation owners.

9 Napoleon Once Napoleon is defeated, he flees back to Portugal. He fought well but there were many disadvantages in what he fought for.

10 1821 In 1821, Pedro became President of Brazil. Portugal tried to set restrictions on Brazil but Pedro resisted and rejected them on September 8th, 1822.

11 Short Term Effects of Revolution Constitution of Monarchy came into play. Pedro makes fairer laws for the community and the economy increases. Overall Peace.

12 Long Term Effects of Revolution Brazil became culturally diverse. Brazil becomes one of the most economically powerful countries. Shows improvement.

13 Brazil Population: 205 million people Exports: Coffee, Soybeans, Wheat, Rice, Corn, Sugarcane Industry: Textile, Steel, Lumber

14 Climate Mostly Tropical Brazil is mostly flat lands, with mountains in the north.
