Reasons for European Exploration GOLD GOD GLORY

The first maps did not include America. Why? It had not been discovered and was unknown. People did not realize the oceans were so big, either.

Portugal had no Mediterranean sea port and could not trade between Asia and Europe

Prince Henry of Portugal became known as Henry the Navigator because he took the lead in exploring the unknown. He decided to find a new route to China and India.

Prince Henry of Portugal became known as Henry the Navigator because he took the lead in exploring the unknown. He decided to find a new route to China and India.

PORTUGAL Bartholomeu Dias Sailed to the southern tip of Africa (Cape of Storms) and later named the Cape of Good Hope

Portugal - Vasco da Gama sailed around the Cape of Good Hope and visited cities along the coast of East Africa and sailed to Calicut, India.

VIKINGS The Vikings-Leif Eriksson-explored America before Christopher Columbus. They sailed to Iceland, Greenland and Vinland or Newfoundland.

Free Information Vikings didn’t wear horned helmets. Vikings were known for their excellent hygiene. Viking women enjoyed some basic rights. Viking men spent most of their time farming. Viking gentlemen preferred being blond.

Spain - Christopher Columbus He sailed the Arctic Region and around the Gold Coast. Columbus sailed for the new world with three ships named Nina, Pinta, and the Santa Maria. He found land on October 12, 1492 and claimed it for Spain and named it San Salvador.

Spain – Amerigo Vespucci He mapped the South American coastline America is named in honor of him.

Spain – Vasco Nunez de Balboa He became governor of Panama Balboa was the first European to see the Pacific Ocean from America.

SPAIN - Ferdinand Magellan He sailed from Spain to the Eastern coast of South America and found a strait at the southern tip of South America. Magellan named the Pacific Ocean. His crew circumnavigated the globe, but Magellan died before that happened.
