NATIONAL URBAN DESIGN AWARDS 2016 PUBLIC SECTOR AWARD Call for entries The UDG’s Urban Design Awards are now in their eighth year. Since their launch in 2007, our shortlisting panel has considered over 300 submissions across a range of categories, highlighting some of the outstanding and innovative urban design work being undertaken throughout the UK and beyond - from finished schemes to design guidance and publishing. The Public Sector Award recognises the excellent urban design work being carried out by local authorities and public sector agencies, as well as charities or not-for-profit organisations. All shortlisted entries will be published in the Urban Design Group’s journal Urban Design. The Public Sector Award embraces a variety of submissions and highlights a range of successful strategies for carrying out urban design work and addressing urban design issues within the sector. Submissions can be made across a wide range of areas – from engineering through to planning; landscape design to community involvement – providing the work was completed during the last two years (June 2013-June 2015). Possible types of entry include: Completed Publicly-Led Development ProcurementPolicy and Promotion Town centre schemesDesign briefsDesign awards ExtensionsDesign GuidanceVision statements New settlements Design codesPolicy statements Urban design frameworks Conservation area enhancement We recognise that in many cases the work may have involved private consultants; whilst this is admissible, the submission must be made by the commissioning authority. A joint approach to residential design guidelines from four North Midlands Councils –2014 Finalist South Norfolk Council Place-Making Guide – 2013 Finalist

Judging Criteria  Shortlisting will be based on both the merits of the project/initiative itself and the success with which it is communicated as a publishable article for the journal.  The submission should be written by an urban design practitioner with a thorough understanding of the project.  Above all, your submission should provide a clear explanation of why the project is an example of good urban design (lesson learned), supported by evidence.  Entrants should also pay close attention to the following guidelines when preparing their entry: The Selection Process Stage 1 – Shortlisting of Finalists A panel reviews the initial submissions to select four finalists who will have their entry printed in Urban Design and be invited to submit a 100 second video for screening at the Awards Event and subsequent uploading to Youtube. The panel (none of whom will be associated with any of the entries) will include:  An academic  A professional working in private practice  A public sector professional  A patron of the UDG.  An editor of Urban Design.  The Chair of the UDG Awards Working Group and the Practice Award Convenor. 1.Aspiration Clear outline of the goals and aspirations which underpin the project and how it seeks to raise urban design quality. 2.Leadership and enabling Consideration of how the submitting body is seeking innovative ways to build influence and demonstrate a commitment to outstanding design. 3.Contextual consideration Explanation of how the submitting body is working to promote local distinctiveness and responding to the specific needs of the community. 4.Achievability & feasibility Are the goals of the project achievable and financially viable? 5.Good quality images Images and drawings should be relevant and of good quality. In the case of completed or proposed development, images should illustrate the overall concept and spatial aspects including 3D images, a photograph of the model or the scheme itself. Images and text should be clearly cross-referenced. 6.Clarity of communication Clear writing style with minimal use of jargon. 7.Lessons learned Relevant and succinct conclusions which suggest what can be learned (positive or negative) from the process.

Stage 2 – Publication in Urban Design and voting by the UDG Membership After the finalists have been published, the UDG membership will be invited to vote for the project which best meets the criteria making the final decision on the winner democratic – a unique feature of the UDG’s awards. Stage 3 – The Awards Event (London, March 2016) The finalist videos will be screened to the audience and the winner announced. The winner of the award will receive an award to mark their achievement. Previous winners of the Practice Project Award include: 2014: Bristol City Council, Know Your Place (UD129, pp.40-41) 2013 (joint winner) City of Bradford Council, City Park (UD125, pp.42-43) 2013 (joint winner): Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH), SPUD 5x5: Youth Voices in South Hampshire (UD125, pp.44-45) 2012: Exeter City Council, Design Guidance for Residential Development (UD121, pp.38-39) 2011: North West Leicestershire DC, OURPLACE TM (UD117, pp.42-43)
