Skeletal System Dem bones, dem bones…

Gotta Move… Locomotion = the ability to move from one place to another on your own

Bones A type of connective tissue that is hard and inflexible –p–place where muscles attach which allows body parts to move –s–shape and support –p–protect internal organs –s–store minerals (calcium & phosphorus) –p–produce red and white blood cells

Cartilage A type of connective tissue that is flexible –bones start out as cartilage –ossification = process by which minerals are deposited in cartilage and turns it into bone –found at joints for cushioning –found in nose, outer ear, ends of ribs, and throughout a child’s body

Marrow A soft tissue that fills the spaces in bones –produces blood cells

Joints A places where 2 bones meet Types: 1.Hinge: moves back and forth like a door Ex: elbow, knee 2.Ball & Socket: moves in a circle Ex: hip, shoulder 3.Pivot: allows pivot motion Ex: neck 4.Fixed: no motion Ex: skull

Ligaments Tough bands of connective tissue that hold bones together at joints
