4 Immovable joints Connect bones but allow little or no movement.
The bones of the skull are held together by immoveable joints.

5 Movable Joints Most joints are movable. They are held together by ligaments. Ligaments hold bones in place at the joints.

6 Hinge Joint Found in the knee, elbow.
Allows forward and backward motion.

7 Ball & Socket Found in the shoulder and hip.
Allows the greatest range of motion.

8 Pivot Found in the neck. Allows one bone to rotate around the other.

9 Gliding Found in the spine. Allows one bone to slide over the other.

10 Organ System A group of organs that work together to perform major jobs.

11 Muscle A type of tissue that makes it possible for your body to move

14 What are the Characteristics of Bones?
The word SKELETON comes from the Greek Words meaning “ a dried body .” This suggests the skeleton is dead.

15 Bones Are complex living structures that grow, develop, and repair themselves. Bones are also strong and lightweight.

16 Compact Bone A thick layer of bone which is hard and dense.

17 Spongy Bone Long bones have a layer of spongy bone at the ends and under the compact bone which make it lightweight.

18 Bone Marrow 2 types of soft connective tissue.
RED bone marrow fills in small spaces of the spongy bone. YELLOW bone marrow produes most of the blood cells. Found in middle of the bone and stores fat.

19 Cartilage Is strong connective tissue that is more flexible than a bone. Found in ear, nose.

20 Osteoporosis A condition in which bones become weak and break easily.
