Writing and Naming Binary Molecular Compounds Composed of two anions (binary) Check on periodic table to make sure! Name describes the type and number.
Science 10. Covalent Compounds Covalent compounds are formed between non- metals only Nonmetals combine in more than one ratio therefore we must use prefixes.
Covalent Bonding.  Atoms that share a pair of electrons are joined together by a covalent bond.  A neutral particle that is composed of atoms joined.
Covalent Bonding (Molecular Compounds) I. Characteristics of Molecular Compounds A. Compounds result from the sharing of electrons B. Lower melting points,
Covalent Bonding.  Atoms share electrons  Occurs between two non-metals.
Covalent compounds Sharing of electrons. Chemical Bonds Ionic Bond – Transfer of electron – Exist in a crystal lattice form Covalent Bond – Pairs of electrons.
Starts with Metal 1) Write the name of the 1st element 2) Write the name of the 2nd element, change the ending to -ide 2) Write the name of the polyatomic.

Type III Binary Compounds Key Points 2 non-metals bonding non metals have positive oxidation states

Steps to Naming Type III 1st element is named 1st and full name is used 2nd element is named as an anion (-ide) Prefixes are used in 1st and 2nd element name to signify number of atoms present

Steps to Naming Type III Prefixes 1 - 10 - Mono - Hexa - Di - Hepta - Tri - Octa - Tetra - Nona - Penta - Deca

The Prefix Mono is NEVER used for first element Very Important!!!!! LOOK The Prefix Mono is NEVER used for first element

Example Compound: CO First element is C for Carbon Named Carbon First element has 1 atom (do not use mono) Second element is O for Oxygen Named Monoxide Full Name of compound is Carbon Monoxide

More Examples Try these in your notes BF3 N2O5 H2O
