Halloween

When is it celebrated? 31 st October On the Eve of a Catholic Festival ‘All Saints’ Autumn time Leaves begin to change colour

What is Halloween? One night in the year when ghosts, witches and fairies are active

Why do we celebrate it? At the end of summer, the Celts thought the barrier between our world and the world of ghosts and spirits became thin. This meant weird creatures with strange powers could wander about on Earth. The Celts had a big party to scare away the ghosts and spirits. Later, with the Christian religion, the day became known as All Hallows' Eve - the day before All Saints' Day on 1 November.

Did you know? Neither the word Halloween or the date are mentioned in any Anglo-Saxon text which suggests it did not exist thousands of years ago We sometimes build bonfires to frighten the spirits away
