How to Quote Sources Incorporating Others’ Words for Support

Quoting Poetry (Verse) 3 or fewer than lines of poetry, set off in quotation marks and mark breaks in lines with slashes (/) Ex. Cullen concludes, "Of all the things that happened there / That's all I remember" (11-12). More than 3 lines of poetry, copy as written in the poem w/o quotation marks in block format Ex. In his poem "My Papa's Waltz," Theodore Roethke explores his childhood with his father: The whiskey on your breath Could make a small boy dizzy; But I hung on like death: Such waltzing was not easy. We Romped until the pans Slid from the kitchen shelf; My mother's countenance Could not unfrown itself. (quoted in Shrodes, Finestone, Shugrue 202)

Quoting Prose 4 lines or less of prose is set off in quotation marks with the parenthetical citation inside the last quotation mark Ex. Is it possible that dreams may express "profound aspects of personality" (Foulkes 184)? More than 4 lines of prose needs to be set off in block format w/o quotation marks & the citation is outside the last punctuation mark Ex. Nelly Dean treats Heathcliff poorly and dehumanizes him throughout her narration: They entirely refused to have it in bed with them, or even in their room, and I had no more sense, so, I put it on the landing of the stairs, hoping it would be gone on the morrow. By chance, or else attracted by hearing his voice, it crept to Mr. Earnshaw's door, and there he found it on quitting his chamber. Inquiries were made as to how it got there; I was obliged to confess, and in recompense for my cowardice and inhumanity was sent out of the house. (Bronte 78)

Samples – Correct or Incorrect & Explain When one inquires if freedom is worth fighting for, one can look to Shakespeare’s famous “St. Crispin Day Speech”: He that outlives this day, and comes safe home, Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd, And rouse him at the name of Crispian. He that shall live this day, and see old age, Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours, And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian.' Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars, And say 'These wounds I had on Crispian's day.' Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot, But he'll remember, with advantages, What feats he did that day. (24 – 34) Correct - more than 4 lines are in block format

Correct/Incorrect & Explain Many of the freedoms taken for granted are outlined in the Preamble like to secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity. Incorrect - “secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity” (parenthetical citation). When the country was just forming, the question how much freedom is enough was very important. For instance, colonists knew that they needed their own personal freedoms and had to fight for those freedoms which occurred in Shay’s Rebellion where farmers fought to not have to pay taxes for the war which inspired “insure domestic tranquility” to be added to the Preamble (parenthetical citation). Correct

Correct/Incorrect & Explain Freedom may be the last thought on a loved one’s mind when all they long for is “the day when these battles are o’er/ [because he or she pines] like a bird for its mate” (30-31). Correct – 2 lines separated w/ a /
