KEEPING AN EFFECTIVE PROCESS JOURNAL The Personal Project

Getting started Have you defined your goal? Do you know what you want to “do” for your project? If you’re stuck, take a minute to identify your interests… find a topic that “brings you to life.”  What do you like to do during your free time?  What ideas do you have about career or post-high school?  Is there a hobby you’ve always wanted to try, but could never quite fit it in?  Are you already involved in a sport/club/activity that you can extend in interesting ways?  What are you curious about?

Documenting the process! 1. Choose the format you want to use to record your progress…. Your process journal may be 1. Written 2. Visual 3. Audio 4. Combination of the above 2. The process journal is personal to you. You add to this journal throughout the personal project. 3. You will use the process journal to produce evidence of addressing the 4 objectives of the project.

Personal Project Objectives Criterion A: Investigating Criterion B: Planning Criterion C: Taking action Criterion D: Reflecting

Types of evidence: Criterion B: Planning  Develop criteria for the product/outcome  Plan and record the development process of the project  Demonstrate self- management skills Examples of entries:  Visual thinking diagrams  Bulleted lists  Charts  Short paragraphs  Notes  Timelines  Action plans  Annotated illustrations  Artifacts from visits  Pictures/sketches  Visual/audio materials  Self and peer feedback  Bibliography entries

Another example…

Supervisor Meeting During your next meeting with your supervisor, bring your process journal with you and share it. Here are things to address during this next meeting:  Share your process journal with your supervisor. How are you recording process of ideas, action, research reflections?  Do you have a project goal already developed? If so, share that with your supervisor and ask for feedback.  What are best ways to contact your supervisor? What are best times to meet?  Get clarity on expectations of academic honesty.
