What can I do for my Personal Project? There are a wide variety of choices you can consider for your project: - an original work of art (visual, dramatic, performance, etc.) - a written piece of work on a special topic (literacy, social, psychological, etc.) - a piece of literacy fiction (creative writing) - an original science experiment - a career investigation - an invention or specially designed object or system (computer game) - the presentation of a developed business, management, or organizational plan. -an entrepreneurial business or project, a special event, or the development of a new student or community organization. Whatever you decide on, your personal project should: - Be directly linked to one Global Context. - Be the result of your initiative, creativity, and ability to organize and create. - Reflect your special interests, hobbies, special abilities, or concerns about particular issues. Your personal project must not: - Be something competed at the last minute - Destroy your personal or social life, nor interfere with your studies, even though it will involve many hours of work. 7 Global Context You must choose one Global Context to stablish the relevance of your inquiry (why it matters): identities and relationships orientation in space and time Personal and cultural expresion Scientific and tecnical innovation Globalization and sustainability Fairness and development You may consider the following quesiton when you choose the Global Context What do I want to achieve through my Personal Project? What do I want others to understand through my work? What impact do I want my project to have? How can a specific context give a greater purpose to my project? The choice of Global Context will significantly shift the perspective of the MYP project, the following two tables demostate the impact Global Contexts have on a topic or issue in the Personal Project. 6

9 What is Included in Your Personal Project? You must create three items: A process journal A product /outcome A project report 1. The Process Journal You are required to keep a process journal to record your progress as you work on the project. The Process Journal is a particularly useful tool because it helps in the organization of the structured piece of writing, an important part of the project. -It should be regularly updated, each time that you work on the project, and should be used to record progress honestly, contain thoughts, ideas, your planning, your discussions, clippings of readings, meeting schedules and outcomes with the supervisor, reflections, achievements, any obstacles or problems encountered and how you might have overcome them, and what you need to do next. -The process journal should not be redone as a "good copy" since it should reflect changes, doodles, notes in the margin, pictures, ideas, reminders, drawings, etc. -The Process Journal is not written after the process has been completed; additional work on top of the project; it is part of and supports the project; it doesn’t have to be used on daily basis; it is not a static document with only one format. -You can choose the format: scrapbook, a note book, an electronic site. -You should select a maximum of 10 examples to represent the key developments of the projects when you submit your written report; materials directly relevant to the achievement of the project should be included in the extracts for example, if the student has produced a questionare or a survey that has been described and analysed in the report, then it should be submited in the appendix. An example of a typical journal entry: 8

11 2. The Product/Outcome Your personal project must result in a product that shows how you have used your knowledge and skills in a creative, individual and appropriate way. The following are some products ideas: You will need to create specifications for your product/outcome. The specifications are the way you will know you have achieved your goal. You will need to ask yourself different quesitons in order to define the specifications. Possible helpful questions: What will my outcome /product look like? What type of materials will I use? What techniques will I use? What type of information will I include? How will I present the information? Will I include visuals? Do I need to consider any copyright or intelectual property issues? Who is the audience? How will I get feedback? Talk to other people about your specifications your parents, your teachers, experts. 3. The Written Report The Personal Project written report demostrates the experiences, skills and knowledge acquiered through the process. The report mus have four sections: REFLECTING INVESTIGATING PLANNING TAKING ACTION 10

12 The formats of Personal Projects are: Written1,500-3,500 words Electronic (website, blog, slideshow) 1,500-3,500 words Oral (podcast, radio, broadcast, recorded) 13-15 minutes Visual (film)13-15 minutes If you choose an electronic, oral or visual format for your report ask your supervisor for further clarification; they will refer to the Personal Project Guide pages 45 – 47 and Teacher Support Material on www.ibo.org Assessment Criteria 11

17 The Personal Project Supervisor's role is to: -Discuss the issue/theme you have decided upon, and ensure this is correctly worded as a goal. -Guide students in the planning, research (What are their research questions? What do they need to know?), and completion of their projects. -Encourage students to test and develop their own ideas and to respect established deadlines and due dates. -Be present at agreed meeting dates (2 meetings per month). *NB: You should bring your journal to these meetings. Your supervisor will carry out a formative assessment which involves sitting down with you to discuss how your project is progressing against the milestones that have been agreed, and you will also decide on your future tasks and goals for the next meeting. It is your responsibility to negotiate the time and place for meetings with your supervisor. -Confirm the authenticity of the work submitted. -Emphasize that the personal project is not just about creating something: the complete project should encompass investigating, planning, taking action and reflecting and evaluation. -Assess the personal project according to the criteria. -Take part in the internal standardization of assessment process established by the school. \ Each student must refer to the Academic Honesty Policy of the International School Telemark. You can request a copy from of Academic Honesty Policy from the Personal Project Coordinator. The Role of Supervisors / the role of the student Academic Honesty 16
