Bell Work: Thursday, August 27 Add commas where needed. Write each sentence. 1. I gave Mrs. West a donut a cup of coffee and a hug. 2. Mr. Brown our school principal will be at tonight’s volleyball game. 3. I ran down the street across the road and through my front door.

Rule #1: Appositive Phrases  When a noun is renamed, use commas to set off the additional information. James Patterson’s, the author, first book in the series was Maximum Ride.

Example: My English teacher Ms. Gist sure likes to eat donuts.

Practice: 1. Mrs. Fiscus my math teacher assigned us lots of homework. 2. Did you ask about Montgomery the state capital?

1. The girl the one in my gym class ran her mile in under five minutes. 2. After we walked to school, Micah my neighbor opened the door for me. 3. I tried ing Mr. Brown our principal inviting him to our game. 4. Our school Liberty Middle School is the best. 5. Gale my mom is one of the kindest people I know.

Rule #2: Interrupters / Non- Essential Use commas to set off information that “interrupts” the flow of a sentence. Interrupters can be emotional interjections (oh, well, wow), expressions (to be exact, in fact, it seems), and transitional words (moreover, however, therefore).

Example: People think my country accent sounds funny. My friends however think it fits me.

Practice: 3. She was my friend therefore I trusted her. 4. The cost of the book is I believe around five dollars.

Rule #3: Items in a series When there are three or more items in a series, use commas. If commas are already present in the series, use a colon ;. I ate apples, bananas, and peanut butter for lunch.

Example: Anna’s grandmother is good at making fudge nursing hurt animals tending fruit trees and playing Scrabble.

Practice: 5. The boy packed his backpack shut his locker and ran home. 6. The girl gave Zach Alex and me a ride home.

Rule #4: Series of Equal Adj.  Place a comma between adjectives of equal rank describing the same noun. The artist’s bold, bright colors made the painting catch my eye.

Example: Sal’s band plays loud abrasive music.

Practice: 7. It was a cold rainy day. 8. The music contained a soft soothing melody.

Practice: 1. The vocabulary quiz will be on Friday I think. 2. However I may be wrong. 3. I will need my binder notecards and a pencil to study. 4. My sister loves their new heavy metal sound. 5. She traveled to New York Chicago and New Jersey. 6. After school, I helped paint her wall a light calming blue.

Bell Work Aug. 25  1. I love by the way that we get to sing in class.  2. Mrs. Adams my teacher has a snake in class.  I ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch.

Rule #5: Interjections Place a comma after sentences beginning with the interjection YES or NO. Yes, I would love to go to the store with you.

Example: No you can’t wait until tomorrow to tell me the answer.

Practice: 9. No I do not know the whole story. 10. Yes I am positive that I want to go.

Rule #6: Nouns in Direct Address Use a common after directly speaking to a person. Mom, I love you!

Example:  Ms. Gist may I go to the bathroom?

Practice:  11. Katie please pass the cookies.  12. Trevor are you playing tonight?

Rule #7: Compound Sentences  Use a comma when two sentences are joined by a conjunction (FANBOYS). For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So

Katie opened her locker, and she grabbed her books.

Example  The game was crowed but I went anyway.

Practice: 13. Glenn was craving Krispy Kreme donuts but he knew it was a bad idea to eat too much sugar before going to bed. 14. I ran to the bus so I would not miss my ride.

Rule #8: Introductory Clauses Use a comma after material that introduces a complete sentence. Since my parents enjoy watching movies, they go every weekend.

Example After the movies we went for ice cream.

Practice: 15. In the South we enjoy watching college football. 16. Although I did not know if it was for a grade I gave the assignment my best effort.
