Definition Mental retardation refers to many limitations in being able to function. It is characterized by significantly below average general intellectual functioning (IQ) existing with related limitations in two or more of the following applicable areas: communication, self-care, home living, social skills, self-direction, health and safety, functional academics, leisure, and work. Mental retardation shows before age 18.

Children Children with mental retardation tend to have trouble learning. They develop many skills at a later age than other children. These children may have trouble learning in school, especially difficulty solving problems or thinking logically.
