ROLE OF HOMOEOPATHY IN MENTALY RETARDED CHILDREN Dr.Harsh Nigam M.B.B.S; MD; MF (Hom)

Defining MR The American Psychiatric Association 's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual l DSM-IV A mentally retarded person is significantly limited in at least two of the following areas: 1. self-care, 2. communication, 3. home living, 4. social/interpersonal skills, 5. self-direction, 6. use of community resources, 7. functional academic skills, 8. work, leisure, health, and safety.

MR and IQ The term mental retardation is commonly used to refer to people with an intelligence quotient (IQ) below 70. An IQ of 80-130 is considered the normal range, and 100 is considered average.

CLASSIFYING MR There are four categories of mental retardation: 1. Mild, (I.Q 50-70) 2. Moderate, (I.Q 35-49) 3. Severe, (I.Q 20-34) 4. Profound. (I.Q Less than 20)

IMPORTANT TO NOTE IQ scores are not foolproof ways of detecting the abilities and potential of mentally retarded children. Some children with lower IQs ultimately prove to be more capable of leading independent, productive lives than others who score higher.

THAT’S NOT ALL “Educable Mentally Retarded" (EMR) have IQs between 50 and 75 can handle academic work at a third- to sixth-grade level. “Trainable Mentally Retarded" (TMR) have IQs of between 30 and 50 and can progress as far as second- grade level work.

SUPPORT 1. emotional support, 2. medical attention, 3. and vocational training Factors such as these play as great a role as IQ in determining the future of a retarded child.

CLINICAL FEATURES IN MR Low performance in all kind of intellectual task, including learning, memory & problem solving Behavior problems Sensory & motor disabilities Incontinence & convulsions Psychiatric disoeders

HOMOEOPATHY FOR MENTALY CHALLANGED Autistic, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Down’s Syndrome the cases where we break bad prognosis to patients those cases must be referred to Homoeopathy along with proper mental training and behavioral therapy there is great scope of improvement. Obviously the prognosis ultimately depends upon the pathology.

HOMOEOPATHY FOR MENTALY CHALLANGED A backward child with delayed speech delayed walking or delayed dentition responds very well to our constitutional treatment.

HOMOEOPATHY FOR MENTALY CHALLANGED Down’s cannot be altered basically but constitutional treatment enables the down child to accept some education both physical and mental. Nearly all Mongols benefit definitely by receiving constitutional treatment.

A Case of Down’s Syndrome 5/1/8 BEFORE TREATMENT Poor response to verbal stimuli Dull & Sleepy Cannot stand with support ONE MONTH AFTER TREATMENT Better response to verbal stimuli Can stand with support

HOMOEOPATHY IN CHILDHOOD BEHAVIORAL DISEASES ADHD, Stammering, Tics, Anxiety states, Conversion syndromes, Pica, Enuresis, Breath holding spells, Conduct Disorders et al. Diseases for which modern medicine has no definitive answers Homoeopathy is the treatment of choice.
