Conflict in Cuba Spain controlled Cuba Many Cubans fought for their independence Spanish troops under General Weyler forced Cuban people into concentration camps to separate them from rebels and many died from starvation and disease.

What is one question you would ask the creator of this image? How do you think they would answer?

“Remember the Maine” President McKinley sent the battleship USS Maine to protect American citizens and property After 3 weeks quietly at anchor in the Havana Harbor, an enormous explosion shattered the battleship. Although there was no proof, American newspapers blamed Spain for the explosion.

Yellow Journalism Sensational (exaggerated), biased and often false reporting

Would you believe exaggerated reports if they were from a newspaper that was considered trustworthy? What if it sounded believable? Why or Why not?

Fighting in the Philippines Shortly after the explosion of the USS Maine, Congress recognized Cuban independence on April 19, 1898 and declared war against Spain Although events in Cuba triggered the Spanish- American War, the war's first military action happened in the Spanish colony of the Philippines. Rebels in the Philippines also struggled to gain independence from Spain.

Fighting in Cuba Teddy Roosevelt resigned his position as assistant secretary of the Navy to join the fight. He led a group of volunteers called the Rough Riders to join the Battle of San Juan Hill Two days after the Americans captured San Juan Hill, the Spanish fleet was destroyed and the United States turned its attention to the Spanish Colony of Puerto Rico.

What do you find interesting about this painting?

Peace The United States quickly took control of Puerto Rico and on August 12 the Spanish signed an Armistice to end the war. The United States and Spain signed the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898 officially ending the war and dissolving most of the Spanish Empire. Cuba became a protectorate, Puerto Rico and the Pacific island of Guam became U.S. Territories and Spain surrendered the Philippines to the U.S. In exchange for $20 Million.

What would you add to this picture to better show the results of the war?

Cuba and the Platt Amendment The United States agreed to grant Cuba full independence but only if the Cuban constitution included the Platt Amendment. The Platt Amendment:  Prohibited Cuba from making treaties with other nations  Gave America control of a naval base at Guantanamo Bay  Gave the U.S. The right to intervene in Cuban affairs if Cuban independence were threatened.

How would you feel about the Platt Amendment if you were a Cuban citizen?

Puerto Rico and The Foracker Act After the war, Puerto Rico remained under direct military control The United States set up a new Puerto Rican government which they controlled under the Foracker Act.

What do you think this picture represents? Does it do a good job representing this?

The Philippines Rebels who fought Spain for independence, now fought the United States for independence. More casualties than Cuba and Puerto Rico. Rebels surrendered in 1901 and the United States transferred authority in the Philippines from the military to a civilian government.

Exit Ticket What was one of the causes for the Spanish- American War? What was one of the results of the Spanish- American War?
