Philippine Islands also fighting for independence from Spain 1st battle of the war was in the Philippines Commodore Dewey wins easily in the Battle of Manila Bay Spanish fleet in S.E. Asia destroyed Dewey is an instant hero !!!

Americans rush to help the war cause T.R. joins & starts the “Rough Riders” –1st U.S. Volunteer Calvary Unit Many African Americans fought well (save T.R.’s Rough Riders at San Juan Hill) Quick victories in Cuba & Puerto Rico Many soldiers get sick or die from diseases “A splendid little war” for the Americans

U.S gains Puerto Rico, Philippines and Guam Philippines resist U.S. rule & fight for 4 years Cuba freed but had to sign the Platt Amendment, giving U.S. the right to intervene in Cuban affairs U.S. given a naval base in Guantanamo Bay Puerto Rico ruled by U.S. until 1917 then given self rule

U.S acquires islands of Puerto Rico, Philippines and Guam Spain given $20 million Expands U.S. interest around the globe

Many people upset with America’s treatment of former Spanish colonies Many prominent Americans like Andrew Carnegie, Jane Addams & Mark Twain join the Anti-Imperialist League (believed U.S. should not deny other countries the right to self rule) Most Americans wanted imperialism !!!!!
