Spencer Garner, Kevin Dang, Kevin Tarr What was the New Deal Coalition? Describe the role & activities of labor unions & the urban population in the New Deal Coalition?

New Deal supporters favored the Democratic committee Mostly spoke to the minorities With the New Deal the Democratic party dominated the polls through the 30’s and 40’s Organized labor was a big part of the New Deal

The Wagner Act made labor unions flourish Roosevelt was considered a “friend of labor” Over the span of 8 years union workers grew from 3 million to 8 million Organized labor was usually restricted to the craft unions.

Workers most effective bargaining technique was the sit-down strike They stopped production completely in factories. In a few cases violence was used to get rid of the strikers. Companies would give jobs and other services in turn for votes for the democratic campaign.

Roosevelt appealed to the urban poor with labor laws and work relief programs In the election Roosevelt appointed officials with urban immigrant backgrounds. Mainly Roman Catholics and Jews Women, African Americans, Mexicans, and Native Americans were all impacted positively by the New Deal

In 1938, the committee for Industrial Organization completed its break with the AFL by officially separating from the AFL and changing its name to Congress of Industrial Organizations. New Deal Coalition-an alignment of diverse groups dedicated to supporting the Democratic Party.
