2 A. Reasons for Immigration
Arrived in the U.S. in the 1840s mostly for economic and political reasons Irish: Why? Germans: Why? Mostly settled in cities, worked in factories -- extremely poor. Basically no restriction on immigration. Why?

3 B. American Life Based on the pictures, what kind of life did immigrants have? Cite specific evidence.

4 C. Discrimination Nativism: what does this mean?
Begins for a number of reasons: Immigrants were poor and slums developed in cities; blamed immigrants for crime, disease, and alcohol abuse Most were Catholic; Why does this create tension? Result: new political party called the “Know-Nothing Party” formed: strongly anti-immigrant.
