Calories Is the energy you use when you exercise. Calories come from the foods that we eat. Carbohydrates, Fats, then proteins.

Carbohydrates Primary purpose is to provide energy 1 st energy source to be used

3 Types of Carb’s Starches- chief energy source Fiber- aides in digestion Glucose(sugars)- becomes stored energy called glycogen

What are some sources of carbohydrates? Bread, beans, milk, popcorn, potatoes, cookies, spaghetti, soft drinks, corn, and cherry pie. They also come in a variety of forms

Fats Used 30 minutes into exercise Should be less than 30% of diet Saturated fat should be less than 10% of the diet

Types of Fats 1. Saturated fats—come from animal fats. Ex) Fat off of steak 2. Trans Fat– hydrogenation of vegetable oil-- raises cholesterol level. Ex) French Fries 3. Unsaturated fats—comes from plant fats. Ex) nuts and vegetable oils. 4. Polyunsaturated fats– “healthy fats”—Ex) fish or seafood and grain products.

Proteins They are comprised of amino acids. Amino acids are the basic structural building units of proteins. The body produces 20, called standard amino acids. The body cannot produce 9, called essential amino acids. (diet must supply these)

What are some sources of proteins? Milk, soy milk, eggs, cheese, yogurt, peanut butter, lean meats, fish, poultry, beans, bread, pasta, nuts, and seeds.

Well Balanced If diet is not well balanced, body will begin to waste away to nothing. Brain begins to go.
