Running plan Step I.1 Basic radiation levels. I.1.1 ISIS running with beam elements on, target off, beam stop shut. Establish permanent MICE monitoring devices (one in Hall and if possible one in DSA) Radiation survey Recording of radiation monitors in MICE hall and if possible in DSA I.1.2 ibid with Beam Stop open. Establish possibilty of working in MICE hall with no target and beam stop on/off Turn on beam line elements: quadrupoles and decay solenoid. Repeat steps above This is the « PPS safe mode ».

Step I.2 Establish stable operation of target I.2.1 operate target reliably. Verify stability of dip for dips reasonably far away from touching the beam Increase dip until beam loss monitor shows measurable numbers record simultaneously target position and ISIS Beam Loss Monitors and MICE radiation montoring device(s). If stabiliy of target is not sufficient to provide beam loss monitor response stable to better than +- factor 2, Work on improving dip stability down to this level or better increase dip until beam loss monitor is in the vicinity of the a priori set limit (0.5 V), but below. Run consistently at this rate for two shifts and procedd to first evaluation of MICE beam rates. (To go beyond this will require recording of radiation levels around ISIS after some operation) I.2.4 Once operation conditions have been set, turn on beam line

STEP I.3 first beam and detector debugging I.3. Beam line debugging Nominal pion beam momentum 350 MeV/c Nominal muon momentum 200 MeV/c Establish rate with all magnets nominal, and with positive/ negative pion beam (this is the highest we can hope for and will tell us quickly where we stand) Commission beam line according to K. Tilley’s programme Needed: proton absorber BeamLine Monitor, TOF0/1, CKOV, tracker, Monito radiation at all times. Perform radiation survey for Target in operation, beam-line nominal, beam stop in - establish level of radiation in the Hall, particularly at height (buffer tank platform etc.). Issue is safety of operations in the Hall and the decision as to whether we need borated polythene on the DSA roof. Target in operation, beam-line nominal, beam stop out - Same reason, really as 3, but this time to test assumption that we can co-work data taking and Hall work. May need DSA roof, for example, may find that we need extra shielding around the beam line. Its important to us to establish the conditions under which the work in the Hall can proceed. There is a lot to do, not least we need to prepare for the arrival of the solenoid.

Necessary personnel STEP I 1.MOM (will be Ken Long, Mike Zisman, Blondel/Giannini 2.Experts from required MICE subsystems -- target -- beam line -- detectors: MBLM TOF KL CKOV Tracker DAQ Controls ? 3. Suggest that 2 or 3 additional MICE would be desirable Allows for night shifts, write up of operation manuals, acquire non-expert Experience of running the experiment.
