12 m.apollonioMICE Funding Agency Committee Meeting - RAL 18/4/2008 12 Muon Beam Features Beamline Target Optics Diffuser State of Beamline Conclusion target issues MICE target must operate with no harm for ISIS parasitic mode mechanical stress generated metal dust in the first target tests this required an improved design two new target stations are in preparation: T2a will be installed in the ISIS vault T2b will serve as a demonstrator to check T2a reliability (3x actuations) both should be ready in ~ 1 month MICE is presently allowed to produce beam losses < 50 mV on ISIS BLMs special care has been taken to cope with this limit

18 m.apollonioMICE Funding Agency Committee Meeting - RAL 18/4/2008 18  MICE has been given 5 shift times so far: 14-15/3, 29/3, 2-4/4 Summary of 14-15/3 shift operations: - power failure on D1 supply  no beam line  focus on target - Q1-3 inoperative - target successfully run in synchronization with the beam - depth and delay of target dip investigated to limit by any beam loss monitor reading <50 mV - limit reasonably stable and not oversensitive to dip depth - ran target at a good stable setting and a frequency of 50/128Hz (ISIS at 50Hz) - verified target hitting properly end of one ISIS fill without scraping following one - operation mode: MICE in parasitic mode. - radiation survey soon after shift (3679 target pulses) showed no significant increase in radiation - cabling for Beam Monitors and future detectors done - the successful operation of the target shows we can use it for our purposes with no harm for ISIS (parasitic mode): fundamental for future operations Muon Beam Features Beamline Target Optics Diffuser State of Beamline Conclusion

21 m.apollonioMICE Funding Agency Committee Meeting - RAL 18/4/2008 21 Summary of 29/3 shift operations: - D1, D2, Q4-5-6 powered and tested - Q6 showed water leak !  cut triplet out: only D1 and D2 to test proton selection - Beam Monitors (Fermilab) and Beam Counters (IC + Geneva) installed - D1 and D2 powered up: D1 set at 400 A, D2 scanned to find the maximum rate [4 ms gate] - use of remote control system to operate dipoles - first counts on beam monitors - first evidence of selected protons at the end of DSA - total actuations: ~ 6000 -operations with dipoles and definition of particle transport from target to end of DSA (in agreement with calculations for selected momentum ~ 480 MeV/c) Muon Beam Features Beamline Target Optics Diffuser State of Beamline Conclusion

23 m.apollonioMICE Funding Agency Committee Meeting - RAL 18/4/2008 23  Summary of 2-4/4 shifts operations: - GVA1 counter installed (with proper mu-metal shield) - Cherenkov counters ON - establish target depth and delay - re-establish dipole configuration (400A,170A) = 480 MeV/c - first pions in the Cherenkov counterA - start radiation survey - stopped! due to ISIS beam failure - re-establish previous conditions - survey: completed! - D2 scan [2 ms gate]: verify reproducibility - MICE detectors DAQ turned ON - radiation survey completed (main goal of these shifts)  no radiation detected [next page] - clear control of the dipole line - first pions seen in the Cherenkov - DAQ exercised - very preliminary estimates of POT (G4Beamline): order of 10 10 per dip (2 ms) [need to check vs counter efficiency] - NB: 600 good muons require 10 12 POT 2/4: ~2000 actuations 4/4: ~6000 actuations Muon Beam Features Beamline Target Optics Diffuser State of Beamline Conclusion
