MOM Report Linda Coney MICE Operations Manager University of California, Riverside MICO Meeting May 24, 2010

MOM Report-Coney2 Decay Solenoid —Cooldown progressed well until Thursday – most efficient cooldown up to this point —Snag on Thursday o level gauge not working – measures liquid level in magnet o Part of the feedback to the fridge for cooldown process —Problem investigated Th/Fri o Gauge working fine – electronics failure in rack on mezzanine o 1973 electronics – evidence of previous failure o No spares available – replacement parts found and ordered – arrive today/Wed —Fridge in holding pattern – hope for continued cooldown from stopping point after electronics fixed Target —Target calibrations went well this weekend o Previously had issue with target stopping during calibration with raised frame (interlock kicking in) —Chris Booth watched signal on scope during running o issue most likely due to noise on the line

May 24, 2010MOM Report-Coney3 Detectors —Luminosity Monitor o Data runs taken April 20 –Analysis continues - require time-stamp sync between Target DAQ and DAQ —Tracker o Paper submitted to Archive o In the last week: –Read out 8 AFE boards with DATE-DAQ successfully –Read out both trackers with DATE-DAQ o Need to: –repair 1553, get spare(s) –set up trigger cable for hall o Cooldown date & extent to be determined o Then trackers made safe and stored —CKOV,TOF0, TOF1, TOF2, KL o Data taken for calibration of TOF, KL, CKOV o Need feedback as to how successful & how much more data needed —Beam Profile Monitors o Overheated again during running last weekend – not used Sunday

May 24, 2010MOM Report-Coney4 Beam Beam Magnets —Still had the auto-reset and reramp of magnets upon trip —Magnet trips suspected to be software problem not hardware —Updated software is done – install/test planned for M/T/W —Slew rate control of magnet ramp implemented o Ramp fairly slow – needed rate is being calculated by S. Griffiths o Ramp down at end of running leaves some magnets hung ~15A —Sometimes D2 control says “OFF” when actually “ON” Proton absorber —Probably need extra ~50mm plastic for protons in a 240 Mev/c muon beam o Will it fit? Investigate during June shutdown —Need webcam to verify configuration from MLCR

May 24, 2010MOM Report-Coney5 MLCR —Notify MOM if equipment not working – some network ports shut down by RAL w/o notification —Remote readout of neutron monitor not always auto-update —New ssh bastion making progress o Connected up, Malcolm working with PPD computing to debug o Next step setting up user accounts…work in progress DAQ —Many errors during running o About 1/3 of runs stopped early due to DAQ errors o Particle event mismatch errors & still contain data after readout o Rebooted MICEACQ04 – not convinced this helps —DAQ aborted on TOF0 trigger - spills with 155 particle triggers —What is the DAQ limit now? —Need audible alarm for errors —Need to stop DAQ upon error

May 24, 2010MOM Report-Coney6 Other To Do: —FNAL BPM need startup/shutdown/operating details manual —Possible BLM signal from ISIS o Already have BLM8 – need implement in Target DAQ o New possibility for more information – MOM investigate —All manuals on MICO page need date and version number o Cannot tell if subtle changes or if match hardcopies in MLCR o Update hardcopies to latest version —Write Troubleshooting document —Online Analysis machine o Plan is in the works for: –Auto-copy to Atlas computers –Auto-run G4MICE

May 24, 2010MOM Report-Coney7 Weekend Run Summary May 21-23: 21,400 target pulses —Target count is at 223,100 —300 MeV/c e+ beam TOF calibration – TOF1 trigger o Friday – 3,4000 pulses with ~30 particle triggers/spill o Sat – 2,900 pulses with ~27 particle triggers/spill o Sun – 6,900 pulses (estimate of “good” pulses) —300 MeV/c e+ beam TOF calibration – TOF0 trigger o Sun – 421 pulses ~90 particle triggers/spill —220 MeV/c e+ beam KL calibration o Sat – 1,350 pulses with 13 particle triggers/spill —275 MeV/c  + beam CKOV studies o Sat – 2,000 pulses with ~38 particle triggers/spill —290 MeV/c  + beam CKOV studies o Sat – 1,200 pulses with ~38 particle triggers/spill

May 24, 2010MOM Report-Coney8 Weekend Run Efficiency Summary May 21-23: 21,400 target pulses —Target count is at 223,100 Total attempted Runs: 68 Runs reaching goal of 500 pulses: 18 (26%) Runs stopped because of ISIS Trip: 19 (28%) Runs stopped because of DAQ error: 24 (35.3%) Runs not reaching 500 but stopped for external reasons are all considered quality data. Considered quality data (ie. No DAQ error): 64.7% Mean pulses before ISIS trip: 205 rms 108 Mean pulses before DAQ error: 227 rms 128

May 24, 2010MOM Report-Coney9 Weekend Running Summary Controlled access mode overnight works well —easy & efficient eLOG died again on Saturday —Yagmur rebooted Saturday evening and it is fine since Tried to widen beam at TOF0 —Not very successful – need help from Marco Errors in RunSummarySpreadsheet/eLOG? —Beamline currents wrong compared to Marco’s magic spreadsheet —No explanation as to why the change was made – suspect typo —This beamline propagated from March forward How many target pulses do we run w/o ISIS beam? —Relates to machine up-time and overhead to stop/start/stop/start runs

May 24, 2010MOM Report-Coney10 This Week: Run Plan May 26/27/28: —Decay Solenoid cold by Wed?
