Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 Muon Particle Rate Study  An initial study of muons in TOF1 as a function of beamloss was also done using a 337 MeV/c at target pi- to mu- beamline u 100mV - 15 particle triggers/spill TOF0 - 4.2 muons/spill in TOF1 (assuming all hits are muons) u 200mV - 34 particle triggers/spill TOF0 - 8.6 muons/spill TOF1 u 300mV - 44 particle triggers/spill TOF0 - 10.7 muons/spill TOF1 u 400mV - 60 particle triggers/spill TOF0 - 16.1 muons/spill TOF1 u 500mV - 71 particle triggers/spill TOF0 - 19.1 muons/spill TOF1 10

Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 Optimization of Upstream Beamline  Simulation – triangles  Data from Sunday - circles 11

Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 Target Performance  Continues to do well – no problems  Stopped at 50,000 pulses at end of running Thursday  Sat/Sun – went on to final count of 62,650  Target depth  Beam loss over time  200 MeV/c pi+  Inspected Sunday 12

Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 Target DAQ  Target DAQ  Moving closer 13

Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 Target Run Information  Beam Loss/target position pi- to mu- beam  611 mV BCD = 28.4 14

Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 Target Run Information II  Beam Loss/target position/dip timing pi- to mu- beam (Sat)  611 mV BCD = 28.7 15

Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 Detectors  KL installed/bolted to TOF1 u Incorporated into DAQ again u Problem with one FADC module – 6 channels on top of detector  TOF0 ch. 17 PMT still not reading out  All FADCs (except PMT 17) look good u Plots: 300 MeV/c electrons  FNAL BPMs not running now u Hardware problem probably – need check into veto/load signals PMT 17 PMT 18 FADCs 16

Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 Recent Data: TOF Calibration  Beginning to calibrate TOFs  Last year’s data……..This year…  Making progress..need more data.. 2009: 300 MeV/c more statistics  2009 330 MeV/c  2008 17

Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 Operations I  eLOG u Moved to IIT u Works great! Fantastic! u Temporary solution while work w/RAL networking to sort out heplnw17  Magnets: u D2 s magnet H2O trips, Willie increased water flow slightly on access to DSA Wed s No problems since u Q4 s MPS water flow trips – Thursday every 45 minutes during running s Swapped out flow sensor Friday s Now ok – no trips over weekend s Danfysik will replace all flow sensors u Polarity switched u Capacity of distribution board checked s Ok – need few new fuses – may still want upgrade u Slow ramp of magnets – s Software written s Tested and did not work – ongoing  Beamstop not always cooperative – possible faulty controller connection 18

Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 Operations II  PPS u Need rack to RAL u John Alexander to RAL to integrate DSA into ISIS system – TBC  Shifters u Many thanks to my shifters s especially Pierrick Hanlet, Henry Nebrensky, and Ray Gamet s here for 1 week each! s Working very hard for MICE  Alarm Handler u Still need to sort out sound card u Need Decay Solenoid PVs into alarm handler to assist monitoring u Need DAQ variables into Alarm Handler  Need to understand ISIS beam loss vs MICE in MLCR u What exactly defines our limits? 19

Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 Next  ISIS shutdown Oct 5 – Nov 1  Machine Physics period starts Nov 2 – need shifters  User Run ~Nov 9 through Dec 20 – need shifters  Next User Run – Feb/March 2010  Calibrate detectors  Study effect of proton absorber? Build during shutdown  Install luminosity monitor 20

Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 Conclusions  Within the last month:  We are running again  New target  Higher loss limits  Decay Solenoid Operational! Routinely used.  Detectors working  Good NEWS – u Learning a LOT u Last year < 50 particles/spill, Now: averaging 160 – 200 u Running with negative or positive particles u We have seen MUONS! 21
