The Elements of Design Line Shape Form Value Space Colour

Lines There are 6 basic types of lines: Horizontal Vertical Diagonal Zigzag Curved Implied

Shape There are 2 basic types of shapes: Geometric Free form Geometric shapes have a definite shape and name Free form shapes have no definite shape or name

Free Form Shapes

Form Form is basically a three dimensional shape. It always describes length, width, and depth.

Forms

Value Value refers to the lightness or darkness of colour Lighter values make things appear larger Dark values make things appear smaller

Space Space refers to the area which an object occupies and the area around it Positive space refers to the actual object Negative space refers to the area around the object

Positive & Negative Space Object = Positive Space Area Around Object = Negative Space

Colour Colour is the final element of art This element is quite a major topic, and will be explored in a separate Power Point presentation.
