1 Pattern, Texture, Rhythm, Shape

2 Pattern: Underlying structure that organizes surfaces or structures in a consistent, regular manner. Described as a repeating unit of shape or form. (The unit that repeats is called a motif)

3 Function of Pattern To organize or unify an area or object
To provide visual enrichment and interest

4 Planned Pattern Precise, regular repetition of motifs. The simplest pattern is achieved by repeating a motif in a single row or along several similar rows or columns

5

6 Texture The physical surface structure
Real Textures: are those that can actually be touched. Real textures both look and feel Implied Textures: are those that are simulated or invented. Implied textures provide only the appearance of texture

7

8 Visual Rhythm The arrangement of the elements to show movement.
Elements are combined to create a series of regular pauses for the viewer’s eyes, creating a rhythm. Compositional Movement: The path the viewer's gaze directed due to the arrangement of the elements in an artwork.

9 Shape An element of art that is two-dimensional area that is defined by an edge of an outline. Geometric Shapes: are mechanical and require a ruler, compass or stencil to make them precise. (circles, squares, triangles) Organic Shapes: are irregular, uneven and free form shapes. These shapes are also found in nature. (clouds, leaves, seashells, free handed with rounded edges)

10 Line The path moving from a point. Line is used to show the outline or contour of a shape, to create texture, pattern and to suggest different moods. There are five main kinds of line. Vertical, horizontal, curved, zigzag and diagonal.

11 Repetition The use of line, color, or shape in more than one place in a composition.
