1 ELEMENTS OF ART: SPACE

2 SPACE Space is the area in which an artist creates a work of art; it is the area surrounding the lines, shapes, and forms. (space is the emptiness that gets filled with objects)

3 TYPES of SPACE POSITIVE Space: Occupied area/subject of the work
NEGATIVE Space: Unoccupied area/empty space

4

5

6 Dimensions of SPACE Two-dimensional space:
Uses length and width and is a flat surface Three-dimensional space: Uses height, width, and depth Some characteristics of SPACE are: open, closed, deep, shallow, narrow, wide, large

7 GOAL: In this project you will work with two-dimensions – height and width, but you must make it APPEAR to have depth.

8 Illusion of Depth with Shapes
Placement on the paper Shapes placed toward the bottom of the paper seem closer to the viewer than those placed higher on the paper

9

10 Illusion of Depth with Shapes
Size differences Larger shapes appear closer than smaller shapes

11

12 Size Differences

13 Illusion of Depth with Shapes
Overlapping One shape crossing over another makes the shape on top seem closer

14

15 Illusion of Depth with Shapes
Value Contrast Changing the lightness or darkness of shapes can make the shape advance or recede Lighter values advance and darker values recede into space

16

17 Illusion of Depth with Shapes
Converging Lines Lines that are actually parallel, seem to come together at a point in the distance (spacing between lines and shapes gets closer together)

18

19 Lines Converge
