Fitness Unit Introduction Health

I. Define Physical Fitness: The Ability to carry out daily tasks and have enough energy left over for unexpected demands.

II. List 3 benefits of Physical Fitness on each of the aspects of your health:- A. Physical Health 1. Reduces chances of acquiring diseases (heart disease, obesity) 2. Gives you a higher energy level 3. Improves your posture

B. Mental/Emotional Health 1. Allows you to think more clearly 2. Relieves stress 3. Helps control depression

C. Social Health 1. Gives you the opportunity to interact with others. 2. Builds self-confidence in social situations. 3. Reduces stress within relationships.

III. Define the 5 components of Health-Related Fitness A. Body Composition – the ratio of fat to lean body tissue.

B. Flexibility - the ability to move a body part through a full range of motion.

C. Muscular Strength – The amount of force a muscle can produce.

D. Muscular Endurance - the ability of muscles to do difficult physical tasks over a period of time without fatigue.

E. Cardiorespiratory Endurance – the ability of the heart to provide oxygenated blood to body tissues during long periods of vigorous activity.

IV. Define the 6 Components of Skill-Related Fitness A. Agility - the ability to control the body’s movement and to change the body’s position quickly.

B. Balance – the ability to remain upright either while standing still or moving.

C. Coordination – The ability to use two or more body parts together well, or to use the senses along with the body parts.

D. Speed – The ability to move a distance or complete a body movement in a short period of time.

E. Reaction Time – the rate of movement once a person realizes the need to move.

F. Power – the ability to use force with great speed.
