BADMINTON

HISTORY of the SPORT  Established in England by the Duke of Beaufort in 1873  Introduced to the US in 1878  New York Badminton Club was formed  Oldest existing club in the world  Not popular in US until 1930s  Became an official medal sport in the Olympics in 1992 in Barcelona

Equipment & Court  Net  Rackets  Shuttles

RULES of the Game  Server stands behind the service line and strikes the shuttle with an underhand motion  Receiver returns the shuttle before it hits the floor  Players rally until the shuttle falls without being returned  Game Play  Shuttle landing on line= in play  Racket may not touch the net  Shuttle MAY TOUCH the net and still be in play

SERVING  Beginning of the game: serve from the right service court to receiver in court that is diagonally across  Right Service Court: when server’s score is EVEN (0,2,4,etc)  Left Service Court: when server’s score is ODD (1,3,5,etc)  Doubles Game: serves alternate courts until serve is lost  Let serve = serve again

FAULTS  SERVING FAULTS  Contacting shuttle ABOVE waist  Stepping outside court  Feet not stationary at contact  Failing to hit shuttle into proper court  RECEIVING FAULTS  Not being in court  Both feet MUST be on floor during service  Moving before service is made  PLAYING FAULTS  Hitting shuttle out-of-bounds  Hitting ceiling, wall, lights, objects  Hitting shuttle UNDER the net  Double-hitting  Touching the net with racket  “carrying” the shuttle  Unsportsmanlike conduct (intentionally distracting opponent, obstruction, etc)

SCORING  Games are played to 11 or 15 points  Only the serving team can score points  Points are scored when the opponent…  Fails to return the shuttle  Hits the shuttle out-of-bounds  Executes a fault

SAFETY during the Game  Maintain adequate distance when swinging rackets  Face the same direction when practicing drills  Doubles play: partners should call shots when the shot could be taken by either person
