High School Magnet Options Five magnet themes: International Baccalaureate Military & Global Leadership Academy at Marie G. Davis Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology / STEM Visual & Performing Arts World Languages

International Baccalaureate A rigorous academic program, designed to prepare student for college. Students are required to do community service every year and expected to sit for international exams in grades 11 & 12. Entrance Requirements for grade 9 Student must achieve at Level III or IV on math and reading EOG Student must be promoted to the next grade

International Baccalaureate Recommendations In order to prevent scheduling issues in the 9 th grade year it is recommended that students: Take Algebra I in 8 th grade and achieve Level III or IV on EOG Take Level I of a world language in the 8 th grade Schools East Mecklenburg (Green Zone, Ardrey Kell and South Meck. HS boundaries) Harding University (Harding and Olympic HS boundaries, County-wide – shuttle stops ) Myers Park (MPHS attendance boundary) North Mecklenburg (Violet Zone) West Charlotte (Grey Zone)

Military & Global Leadership Academy at Marie G. Davis This is a rigorous, traditional, academic learning environment for students. There is a strong focus on character education, international studies and technology. Students are required to participate in JROTC at the high school level. This magnet program is an accelerated preparatory program for students who desire an academic challenge in a structured, military- focused environment, it is NOT a boot camp! Entrance Requirements for grade 9 A letter of interest and a placement interview are required of the student prior to participating in the lottery process. Contact the school for details ( ) Student must be promoted and cannot have been retained at any time during middle school Note: Athletic participation is available at the home school. County-wide magnet program – shuttle stops—9:15 to 4:15 schedule

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) A student with an aptitude in these subject areas is a natural fit for the program. The program uses problem-based experiences in the math and science fields. This allows students to apply their knowledge and skills to solving real- world problems, including protection of the environment. Entrance Requirements for grade 9 Students must score level III or IV on Math and Science EOG tests. School Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology (County-wide)

Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology Offers a rigorous academic and technical curriculum in three STEM Academies: STEM Academy of Engineering STEM Academy of Information Technology Biomedical STEM Academy More than 40 career and technical education courses are offered within the three STEM Academies.

Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology Academy of Engineering: Electrical Engineering, Construction Engineering, Automotive Engineering and Civil Engineering Academy of Information Technology: Computer Programming, Web Development and Networking & Computer Engineering Biomedical Academy: Medical & Diagnostics, Medical Information Technology, Biotechnology Entrance Requirements for grade 9 Students must score level III or IV on Math and Science EOG tests. Visual & Performing Arts This program allows students to pursue their area of art interest combined with a rigorous academic program. Collaborations with Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, Charlotte Symphony, NC Dance Theatre, the Mint Museums and other local arts organizations. Entrance Requirement for grade 9 Student must complete an audition application and successfully participate in a scheduled audition at Northwest. World Languages At the high school level, language students follow an accelerated course of study that stresses grammar, writing, composition, literature, culture and international trade. Students will have the opportunity to take up to 8 elective courses in their target language during grades Magnet program students are required to take seven (7) elective courses in their target language during grades The program serves as a continuation for world language immersion students and may be open to any student with a strong interest in foreign language study. Entrance Requirement for grade 9 Students must score level III or IV on Reading EOG test. Recommendation: entering ninth graders have completed level I of a world language; if not, the student must be willing to take levels I and II during the ninth grade year.
