COMMUNICATING WITH OTHERS Ch. 3

What is communication?  The act in which one person sends a message to another person and receives a response.  2 people must be involved: sender & receiver  A message is the result of good communication.  Feedback lets the sender know the message is understood.

Verbal & Nonverbal Communication  Verbal communication is using words, either spoken or written!  Nonverbal communication is using sounds, gestures, and facial expressions.  What message comes this kind of facial expression ?  Tone of voice is very important when using verbal communication!

You must have your listening ears on!  Hearing & Listening are two different things.  The communication process is not complete until the receiver gives the sender some feedback.  Communication is constant! We live in a noisy world.  How can you tell if someone is really listening?  Listening is not always easy…it takes concentration.  Look on page 40 for tips on how to be a good listener.

Dealing with Disagreements  Communication is sometimes difficult.  If you face a disagreement with someone try to follow these rules: Try to understand the other person’s feelings. Talk about your needs and feelings. Know when to stop talking. Stick to the issue at hand. Use “I” messages.

Meeting New People  If you approach a stranger first, you will feel more comfortable.  To remember names, concentrate on the name and try to repeat it to yourself several times during the conversation.  Offer a compliment to get a conversation started.  Use friendly body language.  Be sure to ask questions when the person has finished talking.

Communication and Leadership Skills  Good communication skills are very important for developing leadership skills.  Leaders are motivators and influential people.  A good leader should be able to help solve problems.  Communication is the key to making and keeping friends!
