Cardiovascular Disease Cardiovascular Stents

Cardiovascular Stents Presented by:  Introduction - Becky Rentz  The Problem – Kim Noah  Significance to Optimal Health – Callie Reeves  Possible Solutions - Jenny Williams  Best Solution – Avigail Banguilan  Conclusion – Joannie Makool

Cardiovascular Disease What is it? Atherosclerosis The Problem

 Health Effects of Cardiovascular Disease  Hypertension  Arteriosclerosis  Atherosclerosis  Myocardial Infarction  Stroke  Congestive Heart Failure  Angina Significance to Optimal Health

 Impact of Health Effect  Family Impact  Monetary Impact  Insurance Significance to Optimal Health

 Lifestyle Changes  Medicine  Catheter Based Procedures  Surgery Possible Solutions

Best Solution - Stents The stent is introduced into the blood vessel on a balloon catheter. The doctor maneuvers the balloon catheter to the blocked area of the artery and inflates the balloon. The inflation of the balloon causes the stent to expand, pressing it against the vessel wall. The balloon is then deflated and withdrawn. The stent stays in place permanently, holding the vessel open and improving the flow of blood.

 Design Advantages:  Improves Blood Flow  Seals Previous Tears in Artery Walls  Prevents Restenosis  Prevents Heart Attacks  Minimal Complications after Surgery Best Solution: Coronary Stents and Lifestyle Changes

 Procedure Advantages:  Shorter Recovery Times  Requires less time in the Hospital  No need for Open-chest Surgery  Less Likely to Need Repeat Procedures Later in Life Best Solution: Coronary Stents and Lifestyle Changes

 Effect of Problem on Health What if not Addressed?  Possible Solutions  Selected Solution Summary and Conclusions

Have a Healthy Heart!
