Presentation transcript:

Counseling in the College Selection Process Dr. Patrick O’Connor

The course was a comprehensive introduction and application of the key theories and strategies school counselors need to help students and parents with college choices. Topics include: developing a college-going culture and curriculum, advising students on courses to prepare them for college, test preparation, visiting college campuses, letters of recommendation, paying for college, and working with families in the college admission process.

Basically it was everything you need to know to help students and families prepare, apply and pay for college.

 I received a grant to take the class through MCAN (Michigan College Access Network)  Tuition and textbooks were covered -- $  Earned 3 graduate credits through University of Sioux Falls.  Online class June 24-Aug 2

Gap Year Programs Taking a year off before starting college. “Gap years give kids the opportunity to figure out what they want to do with their lives, but also what they don’t want to do. And they don’t need a trust fund to make it happen!”

Most colleges are more than happy to let admitted students have a gap year, and will still hold a seat for that student for the following fall. Put another way, if a senior who has been admitted to college for Fall 2010 decides to take a gap year, they can contact the college and ask to defer admission for a year. If the college agrees (most private colleges are happy to do this, as well as some public colleges, but always ask), the student usually gives the college an enrollment deposit and signs a commitment to attend in Fall The student then pursues a gap year, begins college the following fall, and all is well.
