INTERJECTIONS

Today's Objectives: I can identify and use interjections in writing. I can log on to and navigate within Compass Learning.

*** I can identify and use interjections in writing. *** Hooray For Interjections!!! Interjections! What are they? Interjections are one of the parts of speech. Although other parts of speech like nouns and verbs can come anywhere in a sentence, you will usually find interjections as the first word. Hooray! We won the game. Gee whiz! The team lost the championship. Ouch! Tom dropped the book on my foot.

*** I can identify and use interjections in writing. *** An interjection is like a shout at the beginning of a sentence. You put strong feeling or emotion into one word and express that as an interjection. Interjections express feelings of happiness, sadness, excitement, disappointment, anger, disgust, horror, shock or any other strong emotion. You can even invent your own interjections. *** I can identify and use interjections in writing. *** You might think of an interjection as a pinch of spice to add zing to a sentence or story. But, be careful. Too many interjections can lose their punch and make your sentences sound silly. Using too many interjections is like using too much spice. It’s too much!

*** I can identify and use interjections in writing. *** Some interjections have an exclamation point after them. This is because the emotion is very strong. When we want to show an emotion or feeling that is not so strong, we use a comma after the interjection. Hello, my name is Susan. Oh, that’s the movie I hoped to see. When we use interjections, we have to decide whether we want to show strong emotion or emotion that is not so strong. Is the emotion a shout or a sigh? Once we decide, we use either an exclamation point or a comma.

*** I can identify and use interjections in writing. *** What did you learn today? Say it! Write it! Pass it! Turn to the neighbor to your right and tell him/her one thing you learned today. Write down two sentences using interjections, one using a comma and one using an exclamation point. Get creative...you can even make up your own interjection. Pass your sentences to the neighbor to your left.
