1 Parts of speech 3 Week 8

2 Conjunctions and interjections
Conjunctions join words or groups of words Coordinating conjunctions join words or groups of words that are of equal importance I liked the taste of asparagus and broccoli. I enjoy cauliflower but not spinach. In a choice between carrots or beets, I’d pick beets. Correlative conjunctions function in the same way as coordinating conjunctions, but they always appear as pairs. Either a National League team or an American League team will win the World Series. I don’t care whether one or the other wins, as long as the games are close. Subordinating conjunctions connect adverb clauses to main clauses. The parade took place, although it rained the whole time. Because I had an umbrella, the wet weather didn’t bother me. Interjections express mild or strong emotion. Interjections have no grammatical connection to the rest of the sentence. They are set off by a comma or by an exclamation point. Ouch! That hurt. They have three pets: a dog, a parrot, and, ugh!, an iguana! Monday

3 In-class activity Underline all the conjunctions and interjections in the sentences. Classify the conjunctions as coordinating, correlative, subordinating, or interjection. Monday Ex. 8.1

4 In-class activity From the choices in parentheses, select and underline the conjunction or interjection that makes the most sense in the sentence. Tuesday Ex. 8.2

5 Determining a Word’s part of speech
A word’s part of speech is determined by how the word is used in the sentence. Consider the round. Noun After the first round, the home team had the lead. Verb The students round the numbers to the nearest tenth. Adjective The round shape of the theater made all seats good seats. Adverb He sent round for the veterinarian when his dog got sick. Preposition We walked round the lake. Wednesday

6 In-class activity Identify the part of speech of each underline word as it is used in the sentence. You may use these abbreviations: N = NOUN P = PRONOUN V = VERB ADJ = ADJECTIVE ADV = ADVERB PREP = PREPOSITION CONJ = CONJUNCTION INT = INTERJECTION Wednesday Exercise 8.3

7 In-class activity Improve the draft of a report. Consider adding specific nouns, replacing repeated nouns with pronouns, using vivid verbs, adding adjectives and adverbs, and introducing the best conjunctions and clearest prepositions. When you are finished revising and editing, proofread your paragraphs, and fix any spelling mistakes you find. Thursday 8.4
