Scripting Strategy Practicing Verbal Interactions

This strategy addresses the following TESOL Standards: Goal 1 To use English to communicate in social settings Goal 2 To use English to achieve academically in all content areas Goal 3 To use English in socially and culturally appropriate ways

Definition of Scripting  Scripting is a strategy that prepares English Language learners with sample language interactions or situational dialogues appropriate for upcoming events.

Scripting Preparing and practicing scripts in advance is necessary because: 1. It lowers anxiety. 2. It builds confidence in the ability to communicate in English.

Step by Step The steps in using scripting with students are: 1. Identifying an opportunity for verbal interaction The students should understand the situation of the script.

Step by Step 2. Explaining and Modelling the script Explain the script to the students. Model with one of the students.

Step by Step 3. Practicing in pairs Pair the students and encourage them to practice the script.

Step by Step 4. Assessing students progress and understanding. Watch and listen as students practice in pairs, noting each student ’ s use of the script. Help them to identify their strengths and ways to improve.

Conclusion  Scripting provides English language learners with language they will need in a variety of situations.  It reduces anxiety when students are placed in unfamiliar situations.  The script remains in their memories as back up words. So students will be more: - confident - relaxed and can begin to communicate more freely
