2 Why it is included To encourage students in England to engage with other cultures To discourage native English speakers from depending on their language being dominant Giving opportunities to communicate and work abroad

3 Purpose of Study Understand and respond to spoken and written language Speak with increasing confidence Writing, reading and aural.

4 Key Stage 2K Substantial progress in one extra language Teaching should provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language Focus of study in modern languages will be in practical communication Basic reading, writing and grammar

5 Key Stage 3 Build on the foundations learnt at KS2 with same language or taking up a new one Developing their speaking to encompass factual information that goes beyond their immediate interest Use accurate grammar, spelling and punctuation

6 Key Stage 4 Develop language skills in a variety of contexts Gain a broad understanding of the culture of countries and communities where language is spoken

7 Assessment Objectives Listening: understand and respond to different types of spoken language Speaking: communicate and interact effectively in speech Reading: understand and respond to different types of written language Writing: communicate and interact effectively in writing All equally weighted (10% accurate application of syntax)

8 Linking to Classics A linguistic foundation in ancient languages may support the study of modern languages Cultural heritage
