Democratic leadership

In what context was the style used?  As a coach of a sports team the leader try's to make a decision by involving every team member. And communicates to the team members emotionally and physical. This can be bad because on the playing field the leader will be taking along time to make a decision. This will cause problems because the game that is being played doesn’t have time for people to make long decision they need to act now. Graham henry used democratic leadership in the All Blacks rugby team by getting the older wiser members of the team give their opinions on what need to be done.

How was the style used?  In the All blacks with sir graham henry forming the team into older players come together to organise what needs to be done in the team and then Graham has the overall say on what the team needs to do next. This worked well because the players felt that they were having there say and contributing to the team. Getting the team involved helped bond them together off the field and on the field.

What were the positives of this style in the sporting situation?  The positives were that the older guys in the team managed to get everyone involved and let them speak their opinions. This was a positive because the All Blacks worked well as a team and won the rugby World Cup under the leadership style of Sir Graham Henry. Winning the World Cup was a huge thing for New Zealand and the rugby team because rugby is our national sport. The fact that there were teams who were just as good was plagued by their leadership styles. This was in the South African team of 2011 when there coach Peter De Villiers was known as a transformational leader. Which did not help the team win the cup

What were any negatives of this style in the sporting situation?  The negatives of having a democratic leadership style is the fact that on the field when they are playing the need for fast decisions that will decide the out come of the game. Under the democratic leadership style the leader try's to get everyone's opinion on the matter before they come up with the overall plan. This takes time and wont work well on the playing field. To over come this Richie Mccaw the captain of the All Blacks had the leadership style of charismatic to leader his team when playing. This type of leadership is when the leader leads his team by example and communicates to their followers both emotionally and physically.

Which type of athlete benefited from this style (think gender, age, ability, discipline)?  I believe that people who are highly motivated who are going to get involved and work will be the best person to benefit from democratic leadership. People who aren’t motivated will not give their opinion and there fore not succeed. I say that females tend to be more task orientated then males and will want to get the work done so will get more involved. Overall the democratic leadership style works for people who are motivated to do work but still need the overall guidance from a higher person to decide what will be done.
