Leadership Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it. art Dwight Eisenhower http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LabCGT5an0M&list=PLAlc3K 9WTPJY9cmJ8AQm1OwLo5TjsVoT- Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things. 3 Task Think of a great leader in a sport of your choice – either someone you know and have personal experience of or someone you have observed in the media. Make a list of the characteristics that he or she possesses. How do they get these characteristics?

What makes a good leader? Good communication skills Effective decision making Enthusiasm Knowledge of the activity Empathy/understanding of others Clear goals/vision Charisma Ability to motivate Good organisation skills

“The behavioural process of influencing individuals and groups towards set goals” (Barrow 1977) The influence of the leader, who in sport could be a coach, captain or teacher, is important in developing the individual & the group.

Leader Vs Manager Role of leader often confused with manager Manager- keeps things running smoothly, planning, organisation, budgeting etc Potential impact on sports performance if same person doing both

The Importance of effective leadership The performance of a leader is very obvious in games such as football and hockey. It is less obvious in sports such as swimming & athletics, although leaders are still influential. A leader’s function is ensuring player satisfaction as well as steering the individual or group to success. Higher levels may call for several positions of control

Emergent and Prescribed Leaders A leader can emerge with leadership qualities from within the group (emergent leaders) or can be prescribed by an outside source (prescribed leaders). A prescribed leader brings new ideas but may risk alienation by the group while an emergent leader maintains the status quo.

Task The way in which some people become leaders can influence their effectiveness. What do you think are the advantages & disadvantages of emergent & prescribed leaders? Emergent leaders keep the group harmony but may not bring in any new ideas, while prescribed leaders bring new ideas but may disrupt group harmony.

Qualities of a leader CharismaMotivationEmpathy Communication skills Experience A leader might then operate using a number of styles.

Approaches to Leadership Trait Approach: Leaders are born with skills necessary to take charge. (Intelligence, assertiveness & self-confidence) Also know as the great man theory Not really supported by much research

Approaches to Leadership Social Learning Theory: all behaviours are learned & learning comes about through contact with strong environmental forces. Interactionist Theory: Leadership competencies emerge because of inherited abilities & learned skills http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsusakRf7 T8

Leadership Styles Autocratic: –The leader makes all the decisions & dictates to the group. This is seldom preferred because it lacks variety & motivation. Democratic: –The leader listens to the group & follows its ideas. This is popular because it allows group input & shared decision-making. Individuals feel like part of the group.

Leadership Styles cont… Laissez faire: –A laid-back, do-nothing approach that only works with experienced groups.
