COMMON SKIN PROBLEMS

 Dry skin- Not enough oil is produced (Ordinarily, dry skin (Xerosis) isn't serious, but it can be uncomfortable and unsightly, turning plump cells into shriveled ones and creating fine lines and wrinkles.)

Acne- Too much oil. Sebum blocks pores and causes infections Benzoyl peroxide- is available over-the- counter as a lotion or gel. Best over the counter medicine for acne.

 Dermatitis-is a term meaning "inflammation of the skin" ( rash). There are several different types of dermatitis. The different kinds usually have in common an allergic reaction to specific allergens.

 Psoriasis- It commonly causes red, scaly patches to appear on the skin. Factors that may aggravate psoriasis include stress, excessive alcohol consumption, and smoking. There are many treatments available, but because of its chronic recurrent nature psoriasis is a challenge to treat.

 Skin Infection- Caused by a tear in the skin

 Melanoma- type of skin cancer. Usually begins when a birth mark or mole becomes irritated, bleeds, or changes color, size, or shape.

 A biopsy is a medical test involving the removal of cells or tissues for examination

 Warts- caused by a virus. Common on hands and feet. Cure- OTC/ Doctor if serious

 Fungal Infections- Ringworm & Athlete’s foot are examples. Cure- OTC/ Doctor if serious

 Boils- Infected hair follicle. Busting open a boil will spread the infection. Needs to be drained by a doctor. Antibiotics needed

 Moles- most are harmless. May develop Melanoma. Must monitor and contact dermatologist if changes occur

 SPF- Sun Protection Factor.  The SPF is the amount of UV radiation required to cause sunburn on skin with the sunscreen on, relative to the amount required without the sunscreen. So, wearing a sunscreen with SPF 50, your skin will not burn until it has been exposed to 50 times the amount of solar energy that would normally cause it to burn.  The Higher the SPF number- the more protection
