Skin Conditions  Blackhead  Acne  Cancer  Goosebumps  Sunburn

Blackhead Occurs when the pores in the skin become clogged with sebum (the oily substance secreted by the skin) The exposed surface becomes oxidized, which causes it to turn black

Acne If a blackhead becomes infected by dirt or bacteria, it forms acne (also called pimples or zits). The irritation causes redness and swelling around the area The white pus that forms in the pimple is actually broken down white blood cells trying to fight the infection Acne has commonly been linked to hormone levels and diet

Cancer Skin cancer is called melanoma. It is often caused by too much exposure to the sun. Even short periods of overexposure as a child or teen could lead to melanoma later in life. Skin type is also a factor:  People with fair skin, freckles, and moles have a higher risk  People with dark or brown skin rarely get cancer

Goosebumps This is a temporary change in the skin caused by a discharge of the nerves (usually due to cold or fear) The discharge causes the hair erector muscles to contract, raising the hair follicles above the rest of the skin The elevated hair follicles appear as “goosebumps”

Sunburn This condition is caused by excessive exposure to U.V. rays Sunburn occurs because the body cannot make enough melanin (skin pigment) to protect the skin The symptoms do not show up for 2-4 hours after exposure Not all sunburns are the same:  First degree – skin is red or pink  Second degree – blisters and or peeling  The sun never causes third degree burns
