Lesson 11: Essays and Scissorhands Establish objective for EA 3.2 Style Analysis Identify tone, mood, and imagery created by cinematic techniques in a film Make inferences or predictions based on observations and context

EA 3.2 Style Analysis Essay Your assignment is to write an essay analyzing the cinematic style of director Tim Burton based on the characterization of his films. Choose one stylistic characterization across multiple films directed by Burton, examine the ways he achieves the style through the use of cinematic techniques, and the purpose for which he stylizes his films in such manner (theme).

As we continue our films… Think about how Burton has common trends, ideas, images, etc. in his films. How does he develop common themes in his films? Recurring images, character types, settings, etc. Cinematic techniques used to display commonalities Themes developed from commonalities

2.17 Interpreting Style: Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands Page 148 in SB In Charlie, Burton creates multiple “fantastical worlds” using cinematic techniques The same can be said with Edward. We’re going to watch the opening credits of the film closely – remember what Burton does with his credits? As you view the opening credits, write down your observations in the second column of the organizer— Images and shapes (also include cinematic techniques), and Music

Share Out Observations What interpretations can we make from the observations? What can we infer or predict about the film? Predictions/Inferences about Film Predictions/Inferences about Mood Predictions/Inferences about Tone

Clip Two: Framing the Story Edward’s story is introduce in the “frame story” of the movie: An old woman prepares to narrate the story to her granddaughter. What other films do you know that use a “frame story” to introduce the full plot of the film?

Observations As you view the next 4 minute sequence, write down your observations of what is happening in the scene: o Music o Angles o Movements o Shots o Images

Share Observations to the class Now what can we infer or predict based on the observations during the frame story?

Check for Understanding: Half Sheet, Turn in to tray Respond to questions below in complete sentences:  In the frame story sequence, the images, music, and lighting suggest the story is a bedtime story. How does this suggestion shift the mood?  What themes could be developed from our viewings of Alice, Charlie, and thus far in Edward? What details lead you to develop said themes?
